What do your guinea pig's noises mean?

Animal Medical Centre's team advise that a relaxed and happy guinea pig will often make these sounds:

  • Wheeking - A high-pitched squeal, often heard when they're excited about food or attention.
  • Purring - A soft, deep purr usually signals contentment, especially if they're being stroked.
  • Chutting - A series of short, rhythmic sounds, often made when they're exploring or enjoying themselves.
  • Whistling - Some guinea pigs whistle when they're particularly happy, such as when they greet you.

Our team explain that some guinea pig sounds indicate discomfort, stress, or even health problems:

  • Teeth chattering - A fast, repetitive clicking sound that usually means annoyance or a warning to back off.
  • Hissing or growling - Signs of irritation or fear, often heard when guinea pigs feel threatened.
  • Shrieking - A loud, high-pitched scream that suggests pain or extreme distress - this requires immediate attention from one of our vets in Childs Hill.
  • Rumbling - A deep, vibrating noise often linked to dominance or mating behaviour.

If your guinea pig is making persistent distress noises or seems unwell, it's best to seek veterinary advice from our vets in Childs Hill. Changes in their usual vocalisations, combined with lethargy, loss of appetite, or altered behaviour, could indicate a health issue.
